Industrial Hygiene
Industrial hygiene is the recognition, evaluation and control of occupational hazards that may cause sickness, impaired health or well being, or significant discomfort among workers. By evaluating chemical, physical, biological and ergonomic stresses in the workplace, they are able to recommend appropriate control measures to reduce or eliminate exposure. The industrial hygienist will first perform a workplace evaluation, and possibly exposure monitoring, such as air sampling for chemical vapor concentration or noise surveys. The results are then compared to established regulatory levels to ensure that exposures are within acceptable limits. Once it has been determined that exposure is above an acceptable level, the next step will be to determine control measures (engineering and administrative controls or personal protective equipment) to reduce or eliminate the hazard. If you suspect a hazardous condition is present in your workplace, contact the UOEHSM to perform an evaluation.
