Fall Protection

Fall protection requirements may apply to a variety of tasks and university departments. If an employee is required to work on a walking / working surface (horizontal or vertical), with an unprotected side or edge four feet or more above a lower level, they must be protected from falling by the use of guardrail systems, safety net systems, or personal fall arrest or restraint systems. Departments are responsible for developing site-specific, written fall protection plans. UOEHSM will help determine the need for fall protection for specific tasks or work areas, assist with written plans and finally, we will help choose the most appropriate equipment for the application.

All workers must be trained on the proper use and maintenance of the fall protection equipment they use, and must inspect their equipment prior to each use. Finally, all fall protection equipment must be inspected by a competent person (call UOEHSM for assistance), and proper documentation of these inspections will be kept indefinitely.
